Fairtrade Fortnight 2020
Jack Hunt Students marked Fairtrade Fortnight 2020
Students from Jack Hunt School learnt about Fairtrade during their period 5 lessons and participated in a number of fun and enlightening activities, including looking at who made their t-shirt, how cotton is produced, the impact Fairtrade is having on the lives of farmers and particularly how this is empowering women in the developing world.
A number of our Fairtrade student campaigners ran a highly successful tuck shop and information stall outside our new dining hall on Wednesday 5th March. Through this tuck shop they were able to not only raise awareness of the cause, but also £26.20!
Our local Co-op kindly donated a lovely selection of Fairtrade products which made up part of this tuck shop.
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.
By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
The Fairtrade Foundation is continuing their call from last year’s campaign for cocoa farmers to earn a living income, as well as sharing stories that show the positive impact that only Fairtrade has on the women behind our chocolate bars.
“The fairtrade sale we held was a fun charity event that was an excellent way of giving back to all the farmers and people who help provide us with goods but don't get a fair share of money or anything in return for their hard work. I am glad to have been apart of the very charitable event and we raised a good amount of money for fairtrade.” ~ Catherine Cole, Student campaigner
"I really enjoyed the fairtrade tuck shop. It has helped me to grow in confidence and it has allowed me to talk to people I have never met before. We have raised a lot of money for fair trade and I am proud of our team who helped us. I am and will be forever grateful for it." ~ Angel Varghese, Student campaigner
“The Fairtrade tuck shop was a great experience and a great way to make other people aware as well as to make money to help the farmers in other countries that grow the coco beans for our chocolate.” ~ Lauren Couzens, Student campaigner
We are delighted as a school to have been involved in marking Fairtrade Fortnight again this year, this is another fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their Higher Performance learning skills and partake in being active global citizens.
