Our Message to Year 11

WE WANT THEM TO…

Keep going – all year.

Believe in themselves (THEY CAN DO IT…)

Accept all the help on offer.

Work as hard as they can.

Don’t ever give up.

Ask for help – BE SELFISH.

WE PROMISED THEM WE WILL…

Help them when they are stuck

Support them all the way

Listen to them

Nag them

We will be on their side – but also on their back

Homework & iPads

Homework will be set each week and be available for you to track on  Edulink in the usual way.

There is never a day when Year 11 ‘have no homework’: they always have revision and have access to lessons, revision materials and their notes on the iPads.

Materials are on OneNote so can be accessed anywhere on planet Earth!

Team YOU

This is an idea we keep referring to with year 11.

They must all believe we are working together to support them and they are not on their own.

HELPING PARENTS SURVIVE YEAR 11

  • BE A TEAM

Teachers are partners. They want the best for your child just like you do. Find out what is expected and stay informed.

  • BE REALISTIC

Encourage your child to follow a realistic review programme that incorporates 5-minute breaks (every 30 – 40 minutes) and factors in fun things they want to do, watch TV, see friends, game, go on social media. This helps maintain a work/life balance, something we all strive for.

  • SHOW INTEREST

Show them you’re interested in their work and have fun with it. Revision doesn’t have to be hours of staring at notes hoping it sinks in. Encourage them to use Mind Maps (they are utterly brilliant), create colourful posters, and enjoy creating imaginative memory palaces together.

  • PROVIDE A CALM WORKSPACE

Ensure they have a suitable space for working in, away from distractions. If they share a bedroom or have to work in a family space give them “red time” where siblings (and you) can’t bother them so they have quality, quiet time to study.

  • ENJOY TIME TOGETHER

At times, revision can be stressful for all members of the family. Make sure that you make time to spend together as a family. A family meal, a trip to the cinema or into town for a coffee together. This can be part of a reward scheme.

  • RECOGNISE THEIR EFFORT

Give praise for accomplishment and effort. If your child is working hard; recognise it, everyone needs encouragement from time to time.

  • BE CALM AND POSITIVE

This is the most important one of all - don’t get discouraged! Sometimes the going gets tough; remember to act calm and positive. Don’t let yourself get drawn into arguments and negativity. If a child is angry about schoolwork it is often because they think they can’t do it. It is your job to show them they can.

  • MAKE LEARNING A PART OF EVERYDAY LIFE

Encourage the learning, revision and memorising process to be part of the home. Provide a noticeboard (or give them an entire wall!) For their notes, posters, timetables. It helps to have this visible so you know what is going on too.

Training Schedule example

Consider

•Athletes need a training base – where can your child do their school work?

•Rest and recovery is important – do not over train

•Exercise keeps the brain alert and ready to work

•Eat well and regularly – use this as a time to discuss and plan. Can you help in any way?

•Hydrate the brain – water bottle

•Consider a reward scheme / incentives!

•Be supportive, positive and encourage but do not allow excuses!

Year 11 Rewards

Our ambition for this year is to ensure that all Year 11 students will be invited to the Leavers’ Celebration Day in June and the Prom in July.

So far every child is invited to both of these prestigious events.

To ensure they can attend if they wish, they will all be issued with a Passport to the Prom.

A passport will give students permission to attend – and for some students the prom will be free of charge.

It will also give them access to the top prize draw. Last year a brand new iPad was the main prize.

Other rewards include but are not limited to:

  • The Yearbook
  • Leavers' Hoodies
  • Leavers' Celebration Day
  • Ad Hoc Rewards
